Shield Your New SMP Look: Aftercare Tips

Posted by Mary Shoufield on

Scalp micropigmentation offers a transformative solution for hair loss, creating a natural-looking illusion of tiny hair follicles. But achieving long-lasting, vibrant results hinges on proper aftercare.

The First 48 Hours: Crucial Healing

The first 48 hours are critical to healing. So it is important to follow essential steps during the healing period, including minimizing contact, gentle cleansing, proper hydration, avoiding strenuous activity, and sleeping on your back.

Minimize Contact

Avoid touching or rubbing the treated area for at least 48 hours. Your goal is to allow the pigment to settle. Besides, it also reduces the risk of accidental smudging.

Gently Cleanse

After the first 48 hours, it’s okay to gently cleanse the scalp using a lukewarm shower and a mild, fragrance-free shampoo. You may use a clean, soft towel to pat the scalp dry. However, it is crucial not to use force or harsh scrubbing on the treated area.

Moisturize Wisely

Apply a thin layer of a fragrance-free moisturizer specifically designed for tattooed scalps or sensitive skin. This helps keep the scalp hydrated and promotes healing.

Stay Cool

It is advised to continue avoiding strenuous exercises or activities that cause excessive sweating. Follow this advisory for at least a week as you do not want the scalp to sweat. Sweating can irritate the scalp and potentially affect pigment retention.

Sleep on Your Back

Now you might say what has sleeping on the back got to do with SMP recovery. Well, sleeping in this position minimizes friction against the treated scalp. This aids in healing.

Beyond 48 Hours: Maintaining Optimal Results

Sun shield is necessary

Sun exposure can cause the pigment to fade faster. Always wear sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher when outdoors, even on cloudy days. Consider hats for added protection.

Saunas and Steam Rooms

Avoid using saunas, steam rooms, and hot tubs for at least two weeks, as the heat can cause swelling and affect pigment retention.

Swimming Pools

You may have to wait for at least a week before swimming in chlorinated pools. Chlorine can irritate the scalp and potentially affect the pigment.

Haircuts and Shaving

Avoid shaving your head for at least 10 days. Inform your barber or stylist about your SMP treatment to ensure they use appropriate techniques.

Potential SMP Side Effects

Mild Redness or Swelling

Some symptoms are a natural occurrence of the treatment. But they usually subside on their own within a few days.

Itching

Mild itching may occur during healing. Avoid scratching to prevent irritation. Consult your SMP practitioner if the itching becomes severe or persistent.

Scabbing

Some scabbing may appear. Do not pick or scratch at scabs, as this can lead to scarring and pigment loss. Allow scabs to fall off naturally.

What Makes DermMicro SMP Aftercare Kit Special?

The scalp micropigmentation aftercare package includes a healing ointment, a gentle cleansing shampoo, and a hydrating lotion.  For the first week, wash your scalp every other day with the shampoo and apply the ointment to promote healing.

Repeat the process after each SMP session.

After the initial healing period, you can wash your scalp less frequently and switch to the hydrating lotion to keep your scalp moisturized. You can continue using the shampoo and lotion even after your scalp is fully healed for long-term care.
